Zahedan, capital of Sistan-Baluchistan province, was scene of some of the bloodiest protests during a wave of nationwide unrest last year triggered by the death of a young Kurdish woman in the custody of the morality police. A militant group operating in the area called Jaish al-Adl, or Army of Justice, claimed responsibility for Saturday’s attack in a social media post, saying it was in retaliation for…

The mayor of Nepal’s capital has banned the screening of hugely popular Indian films after a movie inspired by the ancient Hindu epic Ramayana sparked controversy. Critics have taken issue with lines of dialogue in the film Adipurush, which was released globally in Hindi and four other Indian languages on Friday. The inspiration for the movie, the Ramayana, centres on King Rama’s attempt to save his kidnapped wife Sita. Sita was believed to have been born in Janakpur, a southern district of Nepal, but the film suggests she was born in India, triggering anger in Kathmandu. Before the film’s release,…

We never had a lot. But before last summer, most people living in my neighbourhood in Pakistan’s Sindh province got by, were safe and could afford to feed our children. Last summer, everything changed when heavy rains and extreme floods – worse than anything I’ve ever seen in my life – brought misery to us all. I do not know anyone whose home wasn’t at least partially destroyed. Luckily, two rooms in my house were spared, but some extended family had their entire homes washed away, so we put them up and I slept in a car on the side…

People wait for Iftar on the first day of the holy month of Ramadan in Peshawar, Pakistan on March 23, 2023. (Photo by Umar/Xinhua) People have Iftar on the…
